Stuck in the middle
Aug. 5th, 2009 | 04:29 am
So after trying to balance noise and temperature by shutting the window in varying degrees I concede defeat and try the front bedroom. Where the open window reveals a car alarm going off.
So I'm up and awake instead.

The Good, The Bad, The TV
Jul. 1st, 2009 | 06:16 pm
The good = Reaper returns on Thursday!
The bad = There is someone on Big Brother using the name "Halfwit". And yes I did have to look up from here to check when they said it because I didn't quite believe it.

Brain Flush?
May. 24th, 2009 | 09:45 am
Apparently the government (and the National Union of Students) are suggesting graduates leave the country, the argument given apparently to avoid the woes of the recession. This puzzles me as the government are also frequently telling me that Britain is coping with the recession very well, better than the majority of the world in fact. If we're doing so well why will these people avoid the worst by moving elsewhere? Surely, if we're doing so well graduates from other countries should be coming to the UK.
Oh wait, if we ignore the government's inability to decide if we're beating the recession or struggling more than average maybe, just maybe, the government want graduates to leave the country because then they won't count towards unemployment figures when they can't find work. Instead, we can have all these people being unemployed elsewhere! "No job prospects? Go bum around Thailand for a few years and make us look like we have an economy!" If we're really lucky these people we're chasing out of the country might even make other countries look like they have even higher unemployment, and we get a double bonus!

All Grown Up

Today I undertook a right of passage - I got my very own barbecue! Sure, I've cooked on them before, even had a few disposable ones, but now I have my very own. I am a real man now.

A Short Story
May. 15th, 2009 | 10:29 am
The problem with the Telegraph's report on MP expenses is two-fold. Firstly, this story is now getting a little tired. We're getting less and less shocked by these claims as the story drags on and soon we won't really care about these abuses. Secondly, like every other story these days, they're trying too hard to grab headlines. The story is big enough by itself, why flog it?

O2 seem reasonably cheap I must admit although I don't fully understand the fact the difference in coverage. I mean, I don't care that I can't do video calls but surely "news" means streaming videos on news sites, right?

Too Many Cooks
Apr. 28th, 2009 | 05:10 pm
Wibbling:
I love cooking, yet I don't really get on with recipes. So I've done the only obvious thing I can do, I'm writing a cookbook! I was going to call it Kevin's KookbooK until I realised a) Kook implies a degree of crazy and b)
the capitalisation implies the book may be about White (Flour) Supremacy, so it's currently without title.

Flying The Seg Way

Wibbling:
Something I keep forgetting to write about is that I've been on a Segway! Last year Cathy got me a voucher for a rally day as a birthday present and last week we toddled off to claim it and have some fun and games, and boy were there fun and games.

Look away now!
Feb. 23rd, 2009 | 06:44 am
White Van company LDV is struggling. Sales have "plummeted" and they closed the production lines in December. So obviously the best thing is for a management buyout!
Yes, the management of LDV have asked Lord Mandelson for a loan to buy their company from the company Gaz. Gaz is owned by Mandleson's friend Oleg Deripaska.
Apparently the UK government are considering a loan to allow Brits to buy a company with no immediate future from one of their friends who won't be at all sad to lose a company that is basically just costing him money right now. When LDV eventually goes bust it's the UK tax-payer loan which will burden the loss, not Mandy's buddy!

Lay a little egg
Feb. 22nd, 2009 | 09:33 pm
I'd rather eat a small portion of good quality meat than a large portion of rubbish.
But I'm getting a bit bored by the impracticality of the chicken welfare agenda.
I like buying biscuits. I'd happily make my own pasta but in reality about 90% of the pasta we eat is tortellini and that's a bit more involved than just rolling my own pasta - it's a quick and easy meal for when we've not got much time or energy. Heaven only knows how many other things we buy have eggs or egg products lurking inside. Ohh, pizza springs to mind! Another quick, easy meal which ultimately uses eggs which almost certainly came from battery farmed chickens.
Do I feel bad? Not really, I have no control over this stuff. If I want to buy a sandwich out somewhere the bread will probably have battery eggs in it, the mayonnaise will probably have battery eggs in it. The reality is if you want to fix the chicken industry maybe you need to start on the mass consumers of this stuff - the manufacturers. Free range eggs on a packet of biscuits? A penny or two we'd not even notice.
Stop trying to make me feel bad for not controlling these companies.

(ex-)Minister watches "Yes Minister" - learns things!

Apparently Ex-trade minister Lord Digby Jones has figured out that the Civil Service has a little personnel bloat in places.
I don't know about you but I'm shocked.
